Free advice isn’t valued.
If you’re a cheap recruiter - or a great recruiter who’s agreed to a cheap rate - then your advice won’t be valued.
This is a problem (at least if you’re a great recruiter) because you are a consultant to your client. Your service isn’t sending CVs. It’s about giving expert advice through the process:
“We might need to lift the salary to get the right people interested.”
“We can have skill A or skill B, but nobody in the market has both A and B.”
“I’ve spoken to this candidate several times now, you need to interview them.”
“Your favourite candidate has other offers coming through, we need to move quickly.”
If your client has shown that they value your service - by agreeing to pay your fee, for example - then they are likely to value your advice as well.
This pays off for them, because they’re going to enjoy a smoother recruitment process and almost certainly hire the right candidate for their situation.
And it pays off for you, because that smoother process gets you to a successful placement more quickly.
However, if you drop your fee at the beginning of the process then you’re setting you and your client up for a bumpy ride.
You’re signalling that you aren’t worth the price you’re asking for. You might even be suggesting that your value is the same as every other recruiter the client has spoken to that week. And they’re less likely to take your advice if they believe that.

P.S. I appreciate the irony of me offering you this advice in a free email.
This is why I run paid consultations with recruitment leaders who want to understand what they can achieve through better pricing.
Not only am I able to commit more to the consultation, diving deeper into your current pricing approach and putting together some specific, relevant suggestions for you.
I also know that you will value my advice and use my suggestions to improve your business. Because that’s what I’m here for.
